New Vendors and Sunshine Break
the “June Gloom” at Annual OB Street Fair
Saturday, June 27th Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach was the site of this year's 30th Annual Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-off Festival, a celebrated and eagerly anticipated yearly community tradition. The FREE festival entertained more than 70,000 visitors. The day was absolutely beautiful and a welcome departure from the “June Gloom” that sometimes shrouds this coastal event.
Non-stop music by local OB musicians played on five stages. One of OB's greatest commodities besides surf and organic food is its music. This year's event also marked the release of the First-Ever OB CD. 'Waves', a CD of OB music by OB musicians, was available for purchase at the OB Main Street Association booths.
Artists Alley was lined with booths displaying unique handmade creations. Children and adults of all ages were welcome in creating a Community Mural Project. A terrific Skateboard Exhibition was put on free of charge by Ocean Beach Skate & Surf Shop. The fully stocked Beachside Beer Garden and Liquorland kept the sun thirsty attendees quenched. Vendor Booths full of colorful merchandise lined all three blocks and the side streets. This year was highlighted by a lot great new vendors.
One of the new food vendors, Papalulu’s Hawaiian Nachos caught everyone's attention and satisfied their hunger with huge platters of island style nachos. Nanci Kirk, an Ocean Beach resident, came up with a delicious island twist on an old favorite. Nanci said she wanted to do something different but had trouble finding a good "loader". That is the name Nanci, owner of Papalulu Catering, uses to describe a tortilla chip that can stand up under the weight of huge chunks of her kālua pork, mango pineapple salsa, topped with a creamy white sauce of jalapenos, cheese, and sour cream. Nanci said “I found the perfect "loader" right here in OB.” Her "Aloha Nachos" feature, Whale Tails Tortilla Chips, created by a local family. Their chips are a favorite at Olive Tree Market and OB Peoples Market. This hearty tortilla chip is certified organic, kosher, naturally gluten free, and the shape, a whale's tail, makes them a perfect "loader". Nanci said “the flavor of the chips comes from the use of Hawaiian Red Alaea infused into sun dried gourmet Hawaiian Sea Salt.”
Celebrating it's 30th year, the Annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-off is now a solid local tradition and is rapidly becoming a summer event destination for tourists.
